How is petrol used?
Petrol is sprayed into the engine in controlled amounts where it mixes with a oxygen. In the standard piston-cylinder engine the piston rises and compresses the gas and air until it reaches top dead centre then a spark is introduced into the mix, resulting in an explosion. The expanding gas pushes the piston back down. About a 3rd of the energy stored in the petrol is turned into mechanical work. The rest is lost as heat and sound energy
