Question

A customer received a gift card for my boutique. She says that she didn't want a gift card to my store and wants to know if I will pay her the cash value of the gift card ($150.00). I do not want to do this, but I want to know if I am legally obligated to.

Answer

You do not have to exchange the gift card for cash. You might if it was the original purchaser, but not for the giftee. In the future, you might want to include some language on the gift card that it is not exchangeable for cash.

There are plenty of websites that do gift card exchanges or offer cash for gift cards. Perhaps the giftee can go to one of those and work something out.
