If a wheel brg has a slight tan color with no gaul marks or grooves has it been overheated to much to reuse?

If a wheel brg has a slight tan color with no gaul marks or grooves has it been overheated to much to reuse?
I was always told as a young(er) mechanic, "When in doubt throw it out".
