Question

I got pulled over for an expired tag in my car (3 months) the officer told me if I took it to the court within 30 days (which I did) with proof of renewal, that I would only have to pay a 10 dollar fee. When I took the proof and ticket to the courthouse they told me I had to pay the ENTIRE ticket. Why is this? They also gave me an extention to pay the fine and I asked if it would cost more, and they said no, but it ended up tacking on an extra 30 dollars or so. I'm not sure what's going on here, I feel I'm being robbed out of money Can I have an explanation please?

Answer

You should ask the clerk for the specific explanation. I believe the officer gave you wrong advice since that $10 administrative fee usually only applies under certain circumstances, and it is probable you didn't meet those. As far as the extra costs, there are almost always extra costs, but I would encourage you to ask the clerk where that $30 came from.
