Question

Thank you for taking my question...my husband and I were asked by "friends"to come and stay with them and help with there daily living needs..house clea cook taken care of there cows exc in exchange for rent.. they are both on workers comp we left for the holidays they live in pa and our family is in nj when we were with our family they called to say that it was not working out.and that's fine with us they both are additided to pain killers and that's quite hard to live with any way.so we told them that we would be up to gather our things cloths important papers birth certif and that we would call first and all was ok.when we called she started saying we owed her all kinds of money and untill we give her this so called money we owe them we can't have our stuff and now she keeps texing all the time and the ammount of money keeps going up and up and we really don't owe her anything..is it legal for her to keep our things..she has no proof of us owing her anything (because we don't)

Answer

Even if you owed her money, she can't keep your belongings. That's called conversion. you can sue her in court for the return of your property or your estimated value of your property. I don't know what county you are in, but you could try asking the sheriff or the police to escort you to her house to retrieve your belongings. This would be faster and cheaper than filing a lawsuit. Good luck.
