Im facing an assault charge in a very small town in Tennessee im concerned about being railroaded i have a preliminary coming up in may i was given 90 days to lawyer up but haven't yet whats the the best way for me to get a continuation so i can get a real attorney and not a public defender
Answer
Issue One - A Public Defender is a "real attorney." I know, I am one. School trained, passed the bar examination,
licensed by the State Supreme Court.
Issue Two - The judge decides whether or not you are appointed a Public Defender, and that decision
is supposed to be based on your ability to hire an attorney of your own choosing. If you have
the income or assets to hire an attorney, then you will be required to do so. Public Defenders are appointed
only for indigent (poor) clients.
